Gates are specialized dental burs designed to be used with a slow-speed, latch-type handpiece. They feature a distinct flame-shaped cutting head on a long, thin shaft and are primarily used to widen the coronal (top) third of a root canal.This process, known as coronal flaring, creates a straight-line access point that makes it easier for other instruments and irrigation fluids to reach deeper into the canal.

  • Non-Cutting Tip: The tip of the drill is blunted and does not have a cutting edge; only the sides of the flame-shaped head remove tooth structure, which helps prevent accidental perforation of the canal.
  • Standardized Sizing: They typically come in six sizes (#1 to #6), with tip diameters ranging from 0.5mm to 1.5mm.
  • Easy Identification: Each drill is notched on the shank or ISO color-coded to allow for quick size identification during procedures.
  • Safety Design: The drills are designed with a thin neck that serves as a deliberate weak point; if excessive force is applied, the drill will break at the neck (above the canal orifice), making the fragment easier to retrieve.
  • Material & Sterilization: Made of high-quality medical stainless steel, these drills are durable and can be sterilized in an autoclave for multiple uses.
